As Evan lay, eyes wide open and pretending to sleep, his mind continued working out what the meeting would hold. At first light, he slipped out from beneath and tucked her in with affection even he had not expectedâ¦there was something nagging at him, but he would figure that out later. For now, there were more important matters to deal with. Dressing quickly, he left his suitcase and a short note saying he would be bringing back coffee.
As the elevator opened to the lobby, he saw the man and woman already approaching the elevator. The young man at the front desk would later swear to his drinking buddies that he was watched a secret meeting between Malcolm McDowell, Richard Mulligan and Gillian Andersonâ¦only taller.
Evan nodded and pulled his colleagueâs to the lobby couches. âDiana, Haroldâ¦I did not expect you so soon. What news?â
Dianaâs eyes narrowed. âEviction.â
Disappointment burned Evanâs belly. He had been too optimistic. âYes, we knew that was inevitable, but when?â
Harold answered, âThey have already launched their emissary.â
Synapses burned through his brain at this thought. âLaunched? Already? Twenty-five years then? Unless their technology has changed, I would estimate a 2020 arrival.â
Diana nodded. âThat is still accurate.â
âThen ten or fifteen years before they will move.â
Harold shook his head. âNo, that has changed and we anticipate only one more year.â
A moment of thought passed with dead air before Evan continued, âI know what I must doâ¦â
Harold interrupted, âWe have projected a landing in the US State called Georgia. City of Atlanta.â
His green eyes searched Haroldâs face. âAtlanta, Georgia? No, this is incorrect. However, still close, it will be Savannah andâ¦â An odd thought slipped from his circuits that the young woman upstairs would call her daughter Georgia. He looked up, as though seeing her through the ceiling above, before returning his gaze to Harold and Diana. âRegardless, I will be prepared. Are we certain this is the mission?â
âEighty-nine percent certainty,â Diana offered.
âOkay, let us get to work. Thank you forâ¦â his own circuits interrupted him with a second odd thought. The little colour his face had drained. âThank you for this, I must prepare.â He stood.
âEvan? What are you thinking?â Diana asked. âYou look confused.â
âWhat of the prophecy?â
Harold shrugged. âWe know nothing. So far there are no signs of it being fulfilled.â
Evan nodded. âAnd what of the Predator?â
âNo sign other than the ones you already know.â Harold stood, looking anxious to go.
Evan gave a quick nod and turned to Diana. âYou said that we did come close.â
âYes, once,â Diana agreed, âbut not close enough.â
âMight I ask what happened there?â Evan sat back down, realizing their discussion was far from over. âYou have not shared this.â
âWeâve never had the opportunity.â Diana bit her lip and thought for a moment. âHe was in Canada. I went to Calgary where I met Wanda.â
âYes, I remember you mentioning her. It was good to know we could develop feelings for these humans.â
Harold sat down again, unable to hide the look of annoyance in his eyes.
âI definitely did that for Wanda.
